Description
Max Humphrey shines a light on 10 rustic National Park lodges in all their airy, timeworn splendor. No historic photos here; the images of the architecture and interiors are as they look today, highlighting these storied places in a fresh, alluring way. Sure, the lobbies are the main stage, but Humphrey touches on grand dining rooms, guest rooms, and rustic canteens alike. He writes about the buildings themselves in terms of the historical goings-on at the time, why they were built, and the players involved, highlighting notable architectural moments and period-specific furnishings. A smattering of pop culture history adds extra bursts of levity throughout.

Molly Fox –
I love how this book explores the National Parks from a new angle. I’ve read through all the travel books and guides before but never really stopped to think much about the lodges themselves, and this book got me excited to plan my next Park trip. Any fan of architecture, interior design, and beautiful scenery needs this book for their collection.

A stunning book! I bought this as a gift for a friend but decided to buy myself one, too. It combines architecture, history, design, and travel into a simple, cute Wes Anderson-y package. I love having it out on my coffee table and find myself flipping through it constantly. Would highly recommend!

Last year I made it a goal to stay at every one of the iconic National Park lodges, starting with El Tovar. If only this book had been out already, I’d have known to order the El Tovar flapjacks for breakfast. We had a wonderful stay at the Grand Canyon and look forward to staying at all the other fantastic lodges in this book. The photos are beautiful and the descriptions enticing. If you enjoy parks, history, architecture, real travel, or armchair travel, I highly recommend Lodge.

For those of us interested in the human side of national parks, or architecture…this book is the perfect complement to the outdoors stuff. It turns out we had visited about half of the lodges profiled and look forward to seeing the rest. Pictures, not words. Beautiful book to peruse and sparks the travel lust.

Beautiful book, cover to cover! Each page is a transportation to a magical, must visit place. Purchased for a coffee table piece, but it has been read over and over.

Delightful. Beautiful photographs. Annotated just enough. Unpretentious. A mandatory coffee table book that should permanently reside at a cottage, cabin, or lake house in your life.
